Why a Hedgehog
The idea of using a Hedgehog as monicker for what we do, comes is different guises. Firstly Hedgehogs in today’s world are seen in many ways from the way they suffering from habitat loss to being injured around urban areas. As a result people have developed a real soft spot for hedgehogs.
Then there is the folklore and cultural beliefs of many societies that revere Hedgehogs in many different ways. For instance in ancient Egypt they symbolising rebirth, in eastern Europe they symbolise wisdom and earth-shaping, and they are seen as sacred household protectors and healers. If we at Commonground are about renewing the world in regards our planetary issues hedgehogs are ideal for creating a natural belief structure.
The final reason is that our first Guerrilla Gardening projects, we want to create a hedgehog run(s) across the back of our local gardens and others around our local village. Click the link to the project below
Our Hedgehog Image
One of our friends is a massively talented pencil artist. We have commissioned her to do a pencil drawing of a hedgehog which will become the core of all images we create from real life (Emily’s image), animations etc.

Commonground ReWilding Founder Ciaran
The idea of having the image create by a real person sums up our attitudes at Commonground. We want to use create stuff that is not AI as best we can and use real contexts. By getting Emily to draw the image and Ciaran (formerly a graphic designer) to adapt the image as we need then we can keep faith much better to our aspirations.
Our Hedgehog – Animation
Once Emily has finished the hedgehog we want to convert it to an animation. The image to the left and top of the page a by Florian Genal who is a 3D Artist/Generalist. The animated look will be all our own we are using it as a great inspiration. However our currentiteration of Puddles is related to learning blender. We are currently designing in what Blender calls Grease Pencil.
The reason for this is that it is easier to develop stories in Grease Pencil while we develop our stories, we are also improving our skills and abilities in Blender. We have used many sources like learning real wildlife examples to Emily and Florian plus many other sources.
What’s in a name
We have been for some time mulling over a name for the hedgehog. Originally it was going to pocket but who is brave enough to put a hedgehog in there Pocket. However we felt that it would be a great name for our Wood Elf, watch this space. Then we had the ides of “Noodles” for obvious reasons (dried pasta).
However we settled on the name Puddle(s) for the moment. The main reasons being, the name trips trips nicely off the tongue and there is nothing better than splashing around puddles in a local wood, where hedgehogs most likely to be found.
Areas we will use the animation for
Blender Animation – We want to use Blender to create different animations to tell stories about why, how and what in regards getting active in constructing different animations that tells our planets story as well as what we want to achieve.
Mixing the image in all its forms with in the visual Structure of Commonground ReWilding – ? the Hedgehog will be like the lamp and ball in Pixar, Columbia’s lady and the torch or the boy fishing from the moon spring to mind. We want to create a look that defines what we do.
Large size Expression that depicts what we do – We are also currently creating a large willow work version. The willow hedgehog you saw above is the first iteration that we created. We are planning on creating a much bigger version that cover a wide range on different mediums.
