Believe it or not we do believe in Elves
Did you know that nearly fifty percent of Icelanders believe in Elves and that elves are considered to be stewards of the environment; so much so that when human projects disrupt an elven habitat, the elves are said to foil construction attempts. Today, it’s just as likely that the belief in Elves “inhabit” the nations beliefs not as a physical presences but as reminder of a time before cities and other modern developments began leaving permanent imprints on the island.
Following this line of thinking, elves represent a connection with the natural landscape that is otherwise difficult to articulate. Iceland’s earthquakes, geothermal springs, glaciers, northern lights & underground sulphur constantly inform its citizens that their land is “alive.”
If the stories of hidden people and the need to work carefully with them help verbalise an understanding that the environment demands respect maybe Elves actually do exist or at least should exist. If we are allow true Nature back to its rightful place a belief in Elves seems a correct path to follow.
At Commonground we are Pro-Elf. We feel that if we are going to follow anything in this world it should be in a world that work and live in. Nature whether its releated to reality or through what we believe or maybe both. This is why with every green creation we produce we always add a little carved door on every woodwork or stone project. We also leave a small hand carved outdoor creations to all our outdoor green projects, much like Mouseman did.
The reason for doing this is to invite elves into you house or garden as a place to live so they can help look after you house or garden. Elves have a love for the woods and forests that grow, hense the strategic placement of Elven doors, that sends a message about the need to protect and grwo our forest landscapes.
If you have been cogitating through this website, you will we hope have gained a better understanding of what we are trying to achieve. This whole project can be summed up within these pages. Commonground main aim if you really think about is to create a socially centred respect for nature and all that entails.
