So What is Forest Bathing….

While a walk in the woods or in nature can be refreshing and enjoyable, Forest Bathing offers a deeper, structured way to experience nature and enhance its therapeutic effects. These activities are intended towards a stronger connection with the forest, strengthen social bonds, and maximise the restorative and health-promoting effects of nature.

Benefits of Forest Bathing

Lower Stress: Reduces levels of cortisol and adrenaline.
Immune Boost: Trees emit compounds called phytoncides to protect themselves, which increase human white blood cell activity when inhaled.
Heart Health: Lowers both blood pressure and resting heart rates.
Mental Clarity: Alleviates anxiety, improves sleep quality, and boosts focus.

Forest bathing itself is a sensory wellness practice focused on general relaxation, which sometimes confused with forest therapy which has more clinical and tends to be related specific health goals or mental issues. The whole point of Forest Bathing is to encourage people into Nature and see the health benefits first hand.

Forest Bathing comes from Japan and is called shinrin-yoku which means spending time in nature, amongst the trees and grass, and being mindfully engaging within a forest atmosphere or other natural environments. It is usually done by walking through a forest at a slow and gentle pace, taking the time to soak up the surrounding nature.

It involves using all five senses and letting nature enter through those senses. Some examples of exercising this can include:

Tasting the crispiness of the air while breathing.
Listening to forest sounds, i.e. birds and insects.
Touching the ground, the trees, and the leaves.
Smelling the flowers, plants and trees.
Observing the surroundings and scenery.

At it core you are going to be walking aimlessly and slowly. You don’t need any devices. Let your body be your guide. Listen to where it wants to take you. Follow your nose. And take your time. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get anywhere. You are not going anywhere. You are savouring the sounds, smells and sights of nature and letting the forest in.

A better way to understand forest bathing is to think of it as mindful time spent under the canopy of trees for health and wellbeing purposes.”

In Praise of Slowness

It is a cultural revolution. A reaction against the diktat that faster is always better. SLOW does not mean doing everything at a snail’s pace. That would be absurd. It means doing everything at the right speed.

Ever since publishing In Praise of Slow, Carl has been the voice of the Slow Movement. He travels the world to deliver powerful keynotes on the power, joy and wisdom of slowing down to audiences ranging from business executives, entrepreneurs and IT professionals to teachers, academics and medical practitioners.
