Ideas for Creating a Contempory Sustainable Arts & Crafts House
Our Founder is currently repurposing his own small three bed house as an illustration as to what is authentically sustainably possible based on our current modern limitations
The whole idea of this expreiment is, to what extent can re-design our own modern modern houses based on Arts & Crafts design concepts and withing the confines Authentic Sustainability. The whole idea here is to create a house that is continually adpating to the more and more we learn to be suatainable and how we regularily change our lives as we take into account how we are improving the ways we are becoming more Authentically Sustainable.
Some ways to create a process of creating an appealing and sustianable space.
The whole point to our Commonground ReWilding project and businesses is to show people what’s possible. One of the problems that came up is how do you create a view of whats possible if you have no space to create in. If we want to inspire people within there own homes to get involved and make changes we need a home to show off. In an epithany moment our founder hit on the idea of renovating his own space he lives in.
His conservatory was old, unsustainable and literally unusable. The question was could he re-create his house by getting rid of the old conservatory. ReBuild the space and at the same time make affordable changes through-out the house that would reflect authentic sustainable changes we can make now.
Obviously there would be cost but my creating some rather lassez faire rules could we re-design the house at affordable cost. Within the design process he set three levels with in the house. The first was a the re-build of the conservatory itself, then there was what to do with the new space and kitchen and finally was internally how you refill the whole of the intenrals of the house.
The other project was what to do with the garden and outside. How do you create a sustainable garden that was ecologically sound. From the initial concept the design came up with a garden that firstly did away with grass, instead creating a number in natural garden spaces. This spaces included hugle mounds, quite spaces for relaxation and a space for entertaining. To make the point there was a no concrete rule, if possible, so no paving or the like, although one brick wall was built for the Green House.

The idea is to re-design the house inside and out is to show what is sustainabilly possible today. The idea is to work in all areas where sustainability is present and needed to be understood. We have been at the project for the past five years but it is only recently that the design has started
We have set some rules about the project is about. There are however three rules that we won’t waiver from. The first is that we have to create an understanding of what’s possible in todays framework where we can be truely green and sustainability. The second is that we want to fill the house with used items and refrain from buying new, even if it is seen in the world as sustainable. This is an important because we want show that we can to use old items as opposed to always buying new. The third rule is cost. We are not doing this on a shoestring, we want to show that old, vintage type items can be as good if not better (see the link below on energy where we talk about vintage radiators).
Due to the fact that there are many ways to design your house we have gone rather maximilist in our design. The idea is to show off different styles and products. Alot of the items in the house also sell in our Vintage Sustainability ReMaking. The garden has a range of different ways to create open spaces and come from our ReWilding Gardeners business.
