How Motivation & Purpose Can be Grown Threw Cultural Exchanges

This is probably the most important essay within the Commonground ReWilding …. because it is about how we can inspire people to gain the will to act. We need to start in a strange place that covers the What, How and Why we do things. Just follow us here and it will all become clearer. Traditionally we tend to sell and promote ideas through the What, How and very infrequently then Why, when we sell stuff. However at Commonground we have flipped the concept to “Why, How and only then the What” to develop better motivation and purpose and it is those imposters we need to develop if we are to have any chance of sorting out our own self induced planetary crises.
To get a better understanding we seriously suggest you watch the link below before continuing.

Ref – Simon Sinek Ted Talk “Start with Why”

We assume you have watched the link above. Here is a brief introduction as to how to move from the Why, How and What to to help drive Motivation and Purpose. You can develop the concepts of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose (with some grit mixed in).

Generally all of us are apathetic to the planetary issues we need to get to grips with. Solving these issues should be however primary in our minds today. It’s not possible to motivate any one or group with any sense of purpose if they insist on being ignorant of what’s needed to be done.

To better understand developing the concepts of developing purpose we need to start with the WHY, HOW and then WHAT doing something. This is start of finding out which direct you are going in. The whole thing here is about the interconnectedness of human learning and life. We have wrote a rather sideways looking essay about it below.

Expanding what we have just be talking about – By starting with “Why” actually leads to something rather unexpected.

The “Why” is the start to to developing “Purpose”

To move forward with solving our planets issues we need to be more motivated to make the changes needed. one This also implies is that we be more honest with ourselves about the true nature of why we need to make the changes that are sorely needed

The “Why” is also closely related to developing the concepts of Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose, )which we get to later in this essay). The idea is that if we have more control of how we work it develops better “motivation” to solve problems we face.

Once we have a handle on the “Why”, We need to start evolving the “How”

This is a very important phase because it’s where we start to grow a Passion in what needs to be done. Its that something that finds it’s place in our soul. It comes from the investigation from the “why” of the subject. The “How” is where we look at the problem from top to bottom. At Commonground we tend to use something called “Reasoning by First Principles” (see essay below).

What we are talking about is “How” do you go about solving a problem that has real meaning to you, from that you can create really meaningful solutions. It doesn’t matter whether you are creating art, designing or innovating with modern technologies, maybe you are protecting our heritage crafts. Being Cognitively Creative is something that is ingrained in all of us. You just have to find your own passion.

The “What” is the actually function or object that has been created.

In fact, the idea of the “What” is a limited concept. Its easy to find to highlight problems (What). It is really difficult to create strong meaningful solutions (why & how). All of us are brilliant at moaning about problems we face but we are atrocious at find proper workable solutions to our moaning.

At present we are struggling to define the climate and biodiversity problems we face One of the answers is that we don’t understand what’s needed. To solve our Planetary crisis will we martial the very best of our energies and skills.

At the core of all of this is the idea of “Human Cognitive Creating Thinking”. We have detailed the Why, How & What are just the beginning of being cognitively creative. Now we need to look at how Humans work and are seriously cognitively creative.

If the “Why, How and What” is about developing understanding around defining problems and solutions. Then the next stage is how do we has both individuals and in groups develop the skills to truly get stuck in to solving the problems we face. So……..

The Concept of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose with some grit added on make up the core of our founders MA degree and his on going PhD in Cognitive Creative Learning. So who better that to explain the whole concept better than our founder. The essay come from his ever expanding PhD essays. Any questions he is always open for a cuppa and a chat.
